The Selection: on the first day of the new year, everyone who is to turn 18 in the next 365 days is lined up against a wall half a mile in length in the main hall of Ersmoth, the capital of the northern district - humans, elves, dwarves and drows alike. Each of the four clan leaders proceeds to pick just shy of a quarter of the soon-to-be-adults. This selection process is based on looks, race, previous reputations and sheer gut instinct. There are roughly two hundred to pick from each cycle. Those who are picked, are classed as the urmna. However, twenty always remained unselected at the end. These are classed as the slattr.
